Review: Øresund Space Collective ‘Jamvofrijonia’

Øresund Space Collective is a space rock ensemble formed in Denmark in 2004, bringing together Danish, Swedish, and American musicians who perform fully improvised psychedelic space rock jams.

Over the years, it has grown into a rotating group of nearly sixty musicians and has performed at major festivals such as Roadburn, Roskilde, Freak Valley, and Psycho Las Vegas. With a constantly evolving lineup, they’ve also released more than fifty albums with a large archive of live recordings.

My first encounter with Øresund Space Collective was the album Orgone Unicorn. I found it brilliant because, beyond being a space jam, it sounded cohesive and well-structured movement with moments of great creative intensity.

The creative output is huge. Between Orgone Unicorn and Jamvofrijonia, they’ve released six albums in just one year. Now, someone might say it’s just going with the flow, and that’s it, but believe it or not, every jam, every sound is meticulously crafted. The keyboard timbres vary from album to album, thanks in large part to the contributions of musicians who bring their expertise from one recording to the next, from one track to the next. This makes each album different, even though the approach is the same.

For example, Espaço 2, the album prior to Jamvofrijonia, is a completely atmospheric record. It focuses more on keyboards and draws on 70s space music masters like Tangerine Dream and Kitaro. Recorded live in Portugal, this improvisation manages to take the listener on a deeply introspective journey.

like a microcosm that evolves in constant motion but always inviting the listener to take the journey with them…

While Jamvofrijonia is also an improvised jam, it was recorded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2024 and released in late 2025. It is a single track of over fifty minutes that moves from pure atmosphere to a powerful climax. It is one of the best jams I have ever heard, and the quality of the musicians can be appreciated in the constant shifts – from moments of calm to moments of intensity, from moments of clarity to moments of darkness.

This is due to the creativity and the wide palette of sonic textures that make this jam so interesting and different. The musicians Mattias (drums), Jonathan (guitar and violin), Christian (guitar), Jiri (bass), Mogens (synths), Dr Space (Moog Spectravox), Love (congas and percussion), and KG (Mellotron and Mini-Moog) make this work open to countless ways of appreciation, like looking at an abstract painting.

It is impossible to determine if this recording outshines their previous releases, since each album from this musical collective is unique – like a microcosm that evolves in constant motion but always inviting the listener to take the journey with them.
