Review: Julie’s Haircut ‘Radiance Opposition’

There is an unparalleled therapeutic quality to truly losing oneself in music, a deeply personal estrangement that offers perfect relaxation and, with the right compositions, a profound purification of the mind.

It is precisely this transcendent experience that Sassuolo, Italy’s experimental psych rock Julie’s Haircut, under the steadfast leadership of frontman Luca Giovanardi for the past twenty-six years, masterfully delivers with their tenth album Radiance Opposition.

Through its intricate soundscapes, the collective channels a palpable ‘joie de vivre,’ an infectious joy of living that unfurls from their extensive journey in expanding their musical horizons. Over decades, they have artfully embraced and absorbed a rich tapestry of genres, meticulously exposing and moulding these diverse elements into an exquisitely eclectic sound that resonates with vibrant energy.

My introduction to Julie’s Haircut began in 2003 with The Power Of Psychic Revenge. This EP, served as a gateway to a band that had already built a foundation with two full-length albums. It was like a key unlocking a musical journey as that initial experience spurred me to explore their earlier work. I discovered a band that wasn’t afraid to experiment. Their sound at that time felt like a blend of Teenage Fanclub’s sensibilities, seasoned with a dash of the untamed energy of garage punk.

As I continued to explore deeper into the discography of Julie’s Haircut, it became clear that evolution was indeed a constant. Their fourth album, After Dark, My Sweet, propelled by the partial production of Sonic Boom, signalled their entry into a captivating electro-krautrock phase, a sound that continued to reverberate on Our Secret Ceremony. This later work was a delightful blend of melancholy and sweetness, showcasing a musical maturity. Each album served as a chapter in their ongoing narrative.

The essence of their music became ethereal, cosmic, and spatial, taking us inside a world of sonic exploration. Records like Ashram Equinox and Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin exemplify this shift, showing a willingness to delve into the abstract. The beauty and intensity present in their work painted vivid imagery in the mind, proving how much they had honed their unique style and established a legacy.

Their latest album, Radiant Opposition, feels like stepping into a different world, a place where serenity reigns and the spirit finds solace. With each note, you’re gently carried away to distant shores, where time seems to stand still. The sounds blend together harmoniously, creating a sense of peace that surrounds you like a warm embrace. Anna Bassy, with her unique Italian-Nigerian roots, adds a depth to the music that is both refreshing and profound. Her voice, soft yet commanding, weaves through the melodies like a sacred mantra, guiding us through an inner journey of calmness and joy.

Julie’s Haircut work is a powerful force that can heal, uplift, and transport us to realms of pure joy…

The record takes you on a sensory adventure, where each song enfolds you in a blanket of ecstatic feelings. It’s a unique experience, awakening your soul and evoking emotions you didn’t know were there. The hypnotic beats and ethereal sounds create an environment that feels as if it were crafted for meditation and reflection. It’s a celebration of unity and diversity, inviting everyone to embrace their true selves.

What makes Radiant Opposition truly special is the way it grips your spirit, refusing to let go. You find yourself lost in the soundscapes, surrendering to the rhythm and melody, revelling in the bliss of the moment. Their music is a labour of love, poured over with painstaking detail and raw, human feeling. Each song is like a stepping stone, guiding you into your own personal world, a landscape painted with both joy and melancholy.

There’s a powerful cohesion here, an invisible thread connecting each track so that skipping ahead feels almost sacrilegious. Every melody, every lyric seems carefully placed to mirror the complexities within, the parts of yourself that have known both strength and vulnerability. This isn’t just background noise; it’s a companion on a journey of self-discovery.

Spring Moon is a perfect example of the album’s magic, with winding drums and echoing guitars. The sound is both alluring and comforting. Then there’s To The Sacred Mantle, a track that evokes the cinematic beauty of Portishead, particularly the captivating vocals of Beth Gibbons. Anna Bassy‘s voice in this song is both powerful and delicate, painting a vivid picture with every note. The song feels almost like a film score, creating a haunting atmosphere that lingers long after it ends. These aren’t just songs; they’re mini movies playing out in your mind, each frame carefully crafted and emotionally resonant.

The final track, 6 am Carpet Candlelight, is a great culmination of their journey. The music acts as a vessel, carrying you gently towards a place of peace and tranquillity. It’s the kind of song that can soothe a troubled mind, offering solace and a sense of calm. The entire opera, culminating in this final track, is a testament to the power of music to heal and connect us to something larger than ourselves.

It’s a reminder that even in our moments of sadness, there is beauty to be found, and that music can be a guiding light, leading us towards a brighter horizon. The record captures the essence of a transformative experience, one where you long to stay forever suspended in its beauty. With every listen, you discover new layers and nuances that stir your soul, compelling you to dive deeper into its ocean of sound. Julie’s Haircut work is a powerful force that can heal, uplift, and transport us to realms of pure joy, proving that the deepest relaxation often comes from an inspired awakening.
