Review: Ni Moya ‘Dream, Oh Dream, Show Me The Way’
In the energetic, often hazy soundscapes of Thessaloniki’s psych stoner rock scene, Naxatras singer/bassist John Vagenas stands as a fascinating figure, whose sonic explorations extend far beyond the genre’s familiar confines.
While rooted in heavy rock, Vagenas has consistently demonstrated an insatiable curiosity for the avant-garde, meticulously crafting a unique universe where the rhythmic pulse of krautrock intertwines with the ethereal textures of ambient soundscapes and electronica.

This adventurous spirit, away from the more traditional strains of his Naxatras, is a profound extension of his artistic journey, deeply cultivated during his formative years as a film and fine arts student, where he first directed his solo film, Warp – a visually arresting experience born from the surrealist visions of Lynch and Jodorowsky, directors whose boundary-pushing narratives also illuminated for him the boundless potential of experimental music. Through such diverse influences and a relentless pursuit of the unconventional, he masterfully builds a world where heavy rock serves as a launchpad for boundless creative expression.
Indeed, the artistic pilgrimage he has undertaken, moving decidedly from his rock roots into the expansive, often labyrinthine realms of electronic music, is a narrative far from unique within the annals of modern sound. This particular siren call of synthesised sound and rhythmic innovation seems to connect deeply with certain creative minds, beckoning them beyond the amplified guitars and drums and keyboard kits that first defined their artistry; much like Brian Eno, whose legendary pivot from glam-rock icon to ambient futurist redefined entire genres, or John Frusciante, daringly shedding the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ funk for intricate electronic tapestries. Even Thom Yorke, whose post-Radiohead sonic explorations have increasingly embraced digital textures and complex beats, Vagenas embodies this restless spirit of sonic reinvention.
With three albums under his belt, each one offering a musical landscape, this artist masterfully transports us to different musical horizons, from the transcendental to spacey vibrations and Terry Riley-esque hypnotism. His self-titled debut, released in 2020, is beautifully woven together with four vibrant tracks of kosmische musik, whose sonic reminiscences evoke the pioneering output of Kraftwerk and Tonto’s Expanding Head Band, built upon hypnotic drumbeats and spacey keyboards. The track And Then I Saw The Face Of God stands out as particularly captivating, imbued with rich Eastern vibes.
Three years later, the release of his second album, Reverie showcased a significant evolution, revealing an artist more experimental, cinematic, ready to echo the stratospheric worlds created by Sonic Boom’s Experimental Audio Research. The final track, A Walk On The Seaside, January 21, is a truly interstellar journey, cementing the album’s expansive vision.
Through this continuous exploration, he consistently demonstrates an impressive versatility and an ever-expanding universe of sound with each new release. Keeping pace with the impressive schedule of unleashing albums every three years, Ni Moya returns with a captivating new project titled Dream, Oh Dream, Show Me The Way, taking us into a world of soothing sounds and ethereal melodies. The cover art, showcasing a vibrant rainbow, serves as a gentle reminder of hope and joy, bringing a sense of comfort to every soul.
With four tracks full of melodious and translucent light, this album is like a peaceful retreat for anyone looking to escape the chaos of daily life. Each movement creates a garden of sound that enchants the mind and lifts the spirit through his unique music vision.
The opening track, Endymion And The Silver Millennium, sets the tone for this magical experience by evoking shamanic qualities that create an atmosphere of incredible peace and tranquillity. From the very first notes, it’s as if you are carried away to serene landscapes and dreamlike worlds, where you can explore your innermost thoughts and feelings. This heartfelt tune offers a sense of belonging and calm that many seek in their lives. The soundscape is rich and profound, and overwhelmingly meditative. It perfectly encapsulates the essence of a connection to something greater, something that provides lasting comfort.
each note contributes to an overwhelming sense of calm, guiding us toward a state of quiet reflection…
Following the enchanting opener is Rainbow Cloud, a track that embodies the delicate relationship between nature and the heavens, featuring a hypnotic rhythm that brings in the sense to surrender to the moment. Its minimalist approach allows the beauty of each note to shine, and it’s here that Mother Earth meets the sky, reflecting the various moods and emotions of life.
The gentle waves of sound create a sense of harmony, highlighting the tranquil coexistence of all elements in nature. As you listen, you can almost visualise the changing skies and feel the embrace of soft breezes, reminding us of the powerful connection we share with the planet.
Ni Moya‘s ability to capture these feelings in music makes Dream, Oh Dream, Show Me the Way a remarkable journey worth taking. The colours of the rainbow hold a special place in our hearts, symbolising hope and joy even when clouds obscure their brilliance. Just like the vibrant hues appearing after a rainstorm, joy can emerge through our struggles. Their kaleidoscopic presence serves as a gentle reminder that brightness can still shine through, igniting a sense of inspiration.
This idea also resonates with the hauntingly beautiful The Future Death Of Mr. Cable, where the themes of life’s complex emotions capture a sense of introspection amidst the heavier feelings of melancholy. The slow minimalism woven throughout allows you to reflect on your feelings, much like how rainbows encourage quiet reflection on life’s trials and the beauty that follows. The hypnotic keyboard sets a tranquil mood that’s mixed with a dark yet atmospheric soundscape.
The steady beat of the bassline adds richness, pulling you deeper into this immersive musical experience. Each note feels deliberate, wrapped in a sense of mystery as it unfolds slowly, much like the gradual emergence of the colours of a spectrum. This slow-burning intensity allows for a connection to the music that is both personal and universal. It encourages listeners to confront their own feelings, crafting a space where vulnerability is acceptable. This process is not unlike observing a rainbow breaking through clouds, an invitation to embrace life despite its complexities.
As the final track, Ocean Of Possibility, plays, it transports your mind to another realm, much like a celestial journey through an endless galaxy. The ethereal sounds echo the work of influential bands like Tangerine Dream and Popol Vuh, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere. The music feels expansive, inviting you to float in a Garden of Eden – peaceful and untouched.
This is an album where each note contributes to an overwhelming sense of calm, guiding us toward a state of quiet reflection. Through this continuous exploration of diverse sonic territories, Ni Moya consistently demonstrates an impressive versatility, inviting those who listen to traverse a rich and ever-expanding universe of sound with each new release.
